Day 26: Add in Decor That Reflects Your Interests

I've said it before and I'll say it again... Your home should always be a reflection of you. Trends and interior decor styles will constantly ebb and flow in popularity but the one thing that will never change is that you will be the one living in and enjoying your home. Welcome back to 31 Days of Loving Our Homes... For day 26 our resolution is to add in decor that reflects your interests.

Often times we look to inspiration as a blue print to how our homes should look instead of as the inspiration it was intended to be. When we do this we are forgetting that a magazine cover isn't personalize or meant to be functional, it's simply meant to please the eye. Although I do believe that it's important for our homes to be aesthetic, I don't believe that functionality and individuality should ever be compromised in order to achieve that. With that said, it's so important to find ways to incorporate your personality into the interior design style that you chose for your home...

Ways to Reflect Your Interests Through Decor

1. Style with coffee table books that are catered to the things that you like

I so often see people purchasing coffee table books that are interior design related because they thing that this is the correct or most aesthetic option when it comes to coffee table books. But, if you are not interested in interior design, why would you choose to display a book all about it in your home?

Coffee table books can be focused around any interest and still be aesthetic. Think about how many books exist out there... When buying your coffee table books look up topics that actually interest you. Whether that is food, coffee, watches, cars or fashion. Once you have narrowed down the interests then start picking a book by its cover. Find the ones that look most visually appealing to you and that will compliment your space. Now you'll have aesthetic coffee table books that actually reflect your interests.

2. Style or create a space in your home around one of your interests

A really popular example of this would be a coffee bar setup in the home of someone who loves to make and drink coffee on a daily basis. There are so many great coffee bar inspo posts out there because it truly is a great way to highlight and dispaly something that you enjoy.

Another great example of this would be to create a reading nook in your space if you love to read. You could include some shelves and a comfortable chair with a small side table. Not only is this an aesthetic and cool use of space but its also functional and feeds an interest that you have.

3. Create a display

Finally, a great way to decorate based on your interests in your home is to create some form of a display in your space. This can range from a gallery wall that includes photos of some of your favorite things to a bookshelf that displays some of your collected pieces.

A great twist would be to incorporate actual objects into your gallery wall. A good example would be to have some collected photos with interesting frames mixed in with small instruments or even records if one of your interests is music.

There are truly so many ways to display your interests in your home. It would be a shame not to. The best part is that you don't have to compromise on aesthetic in order to do so... it just may take some more time to curate the perfect pieces for your space. As I said earlier, your home should be a reflection of who you are and although that may not always fit into a cookie cutter aesthetic, it will always make for a homier space!
