Day 8: Define a Space with a New Area Rug
I can't believe it's already the second week of the New Year. In the first week of interior decor related New Years Resolutions we delved deep into the changes we wanted to see in our spaces and why. But, from here on out we will be exploring small changes that we can make via decor and interior styling that will help to begin to shift our spaces in the New Year.
For Day 8 of "31 Days of Loving our Homes," the resolution is to define a space with a new area rug. For many, this may seem obvious but you would be surprised at how often a missing or improper rug is the culprit for a space not feeling complete! Often, when furnishing and styling a new space, home owners will overlook adding a rug to their space. What that can lead to is a space feeling "too big, too cold or incomplete." Whenever you see yourself describing a space using those adjectives, look to the area rug first. If there is no rug, simply adding a complementing rug to the space can often be a quick solution.
If you do have an area rug and you still feel that the space feels too empty, incomplete or cold, swapping out the rug may often be a huge help.
Things to consider when purchasing an area rug for a space:
1. Bigger is always the winner
Whats so funny? No seriously, size up because there are few things worse than having a rug that doesn't fit the space. This alone can make a space feel off and incomplete.
2. Make sure to choose a rug with complimenting colors
Even if you are trying to make a statement with your rug, the color has to make sense. Make sure it's a color that you have used in other pieces throughout the space.
3. Rug quality is HUGE
Not the price, the quality. Make sure to look at reviews when purchasing your rug because the quality of a rug is more noticeable than you might believe.
4. Use your rug as an opportunity for texture
Bringing different textures into a space is a great way to solve the problem of a space feeling "cold" or unfinished. So use your area rug as a vehicle to bring in more texture. Jute rugs, woven rugs and higher pile rugs are a great way to do this.
"31 Days of Loving Our Homes" is all about finding ways to shift, change and add things into our spaces to make them more comfortable, inviting and of course aesthetically pleasing.
