Day 9: Bring Natural Light Into Your Home
Do you ever feel like your home feels too dark and a tad uninviting? If you do, then Day 9 of "31 Days of Loving Our Homes" is for you! Our resolution for Day 8 is to bring natural light into your home. In this post we will break-down how to bring more natural light into your space AND how to capitalize on the existing lighting.
The lighting in a home can have a giant impact on the overall feel of the home and its therefore not unusual to feel like you're unable to maximize the potential of a space when it lacks good lighting. Having lived in different spaces, I have taken notice of the huge difference that natural light can make and I truly believe in its power to brighten a space both literally and figuratively. I mean, who doesn't love a good golden hour or some bright morning light?
Top 4 Tips to Let More Natural Light Into Your Space:
1. Capitalize on existing lighting by using mirrors as wall decor
This is a great way to reflect light in a space that may happen to have more limited access to natural lighting. I love to place a mirror on a wall near a window to spread light throughout a space. Unfortunately, we can't change the orientation of our homes but this is a great hack to brightening up a room.
2. Switching up window treatments
Ensuring you have the right window treatments is the key to maximizing the amount of natural light entering your home. Some window treatments aren't ideal for all day use and thus can blackout our spaces when we would prefer to bring some light in. My favorite option is to layer some blinds that have the ability to open and close fully and a sheer "flax style" curtain which adds texture but allows the light to shine through.
3. Using lighter paint colors on the walls
I am pro moody spaces BUT if a space already lacks natural lighting, it is super important to use lighter colors in that space. If not, the space may often seem even darker... On the other hand, using lighter paint colors can also increase how much light is reflected in a space!
4. Clean your windows regularly
Cleaning your windows, both outside and inside, is one of those things that they don't tell you comes along with adulting... Like I'm sorry, you mean I have to scrub my windows? Yes, yes you do. It's very unfortunate but cleaning your windows can actually make a very big difference. The exterior cleaning has an especially large impact and including this in your more extensive cleaning routines can make your space feel much brighter!
Bringing in natural light is one of the things that is often overlooked because it seems like something that we can't control but the truth is there are some ways around it! I hope that these small tips will help to brighten your space.
